FIRST IMPRESSIONS People often assume he is a gangster by the scars and demeanor, and Sang-wook does lean into the aesthetic while on contract — think vintage manga yakuza, secondhand loose suits and slick hair. Between contracts, it's dusty construction workwear, cargo pants, padded jacket, cap. He's not particularly vain and his wardrobe fits in a backpack. Usually smells of cigarettes and little else but sweat or dust, as he's clean but not given to something like cologne. There's a very distinctive gaze to him, either intensely focused or as if he's observing something through a pane of glass.

PERSONALITYAt first and second go around, Sang-wook comes off as a violent, silent asshole. While he will follow through on threats, he's not actually a sociopath or a gangster.

Sang-wook falls into the avoiding the mortifying ordeal of being known category. A very observant, quiet person, with high spatial intelligence and low social intelligence. He's almost awkward once disarmed, unsure of unspoken meaning and expressing himself through acts of service. Trauma and isolation has left him anhedonic, a muted ability to feel pleasure, so he doesn't seek to enjoy much. He is also touch avoidant, having been in prison at a young age.

He thinks very little of himself — that he is someone waiting to die, passing time by harming evil people. He is fearful of grief and loss, so he rejects closeness. This long self-imposed absence of good affirms his to him that goodness is a sham, a lottery win. Society is an unjust, superficial place that average people are cowardly and willfully blind to.

In contrast to that disdain for people, Sang-wook is drawn to courage, kindness, and generosity. He's reluctant to believe they're real, but he's quick to be protective of them. When he's forced out of his privacy and single-mindedness, he easily falls into a ferocious guardian role, displaying loyalty and single-mindedness. It is easier for him to survive for others than himself.

BACKGROUND SPOILERS — Though never very wealthy, Sang-wook did grow up normally as a shy, average boy. He lost everything in an arson prank at 13-14, including his father, his only family. He tried to save his dad from slowly burning alive, but became pinned and helplessly witnessed it. The arsonist was caught and given a slap on the wrist, with early parole. The still-healing teenager tracked down and confronted the man in an alleyway, looking for an explanation. When the man was flippant, Sang-wook jammed a knife in his throat.

Offering no remorse to the court, Sang-wook was sentenced to a full fifteen years at the age of 15. His refusal to express remorse at any point during his incarceration resulted in a full sentence served, and Sang-wook was released at 30 years old. His crime made him ineligible for required military service, a black mark for a young man in Korea. The reputation his crime had gotten him and his uncanny demeanor made him even more isolated.

While he survived on itinerant and under the counter jobs, nearly homeless, that reputation caught up with him outside the prison. The opportunity to twist a knife into other monstrous men lit a fire in him — even if it meant taking money from criminals. Sang-wook refused the more lucrative organized crime affiliations in favor of infrequent freelance work as an investigator and hitman.

During a quiet stretch of construction work, Sang-wook was approached by a father trying to rescue his girl Yun-a. Initially he harshly rejected the man's offer of what little he has, angered by the father's hopelessness. However, Sang-wook was moved by the father decrying the injustice, the police refusing to arrest the pedophile kidnapper taunting him. He tracked the kidnapper down to Green Home and began torturing him — that is where the first episode picks up.
